eating well to live well

At Northern Nevada HOPES (HOPES), we want to help you with everything that can affect your health. That includes food. Eating healthy does not have to be hard. Our team includes registered dietitians, community health workers, and the region’s only pediatric obesity expert, Dr. Steven Shane. They can help you choose foods that are good for you, have the vitamins and nutrients that your body needs, and that you enjoy.

5210 — an approach that empowers families

The HOPES Nutrition Team embraces a philosophy called 5210, which is an evidenced based program that encourages 5 fruits and vegetables every day, 2 hours or less of recreational screen time, 1 hour or more of physical activity, and 0 drinks with sugar. This approach helps us guide families to focus on positive changes to improve their health as a whole without putting children on strict diets. We never promote body shaming or hyper focus on weight.

The Family Wellness Program is offered to all school aged children 5–11 years old and their families. This fun and engaging 10-week class includes cooking demonstrations, engaging games, and field trips to support families in making meaningful, healthy lifestyle changes for today and lasting differences in the lives of their children.

One team, one goal

Getting healthy food, taking medication, having safe housing, and managing long-term illness are all things that can affect your health. The HOPES nutrition team works with you, your regular medical provider, and case managers to help you get the support, information, and resources you need to live a healthy life.

Other HOPES Programs

HOPES has many programs designed to build overall health and well being by connecting patients with medical and mental health care, as well as other necessities of living.
