Be the Difference:
National CPR and AED Awareness Week (June 1–7)
At Northern Nevada HOPES, we’re committed to building a healthier, safer community—and that includes being prepared for emergencies. June 1–7 is National CPR and AED Awareness Week, a time to raise awareness about the life-saving power of CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators).
Why CPR Training Matters in Northern Nevada
Every year, more than 350,000 people in the U.S. experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Shockingly, about 70% of these emergencies happen at home, meaning the life you save could be that of a loved one—your parent, spouse, child, or friend.
Unfortunately, fewer than 40% of cardiac arrest victims receive CPR before emergency services arrive. But immediate action can make all the difference: CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival.
Hands-Only CPR: Simple Steps That Save Lives
For adults and teens, Hands-Only CPR is easy to learn and just as effective in the first few minutes of cardiac arrest:
- Call 911 immediately.
- Push hard and fast in the center of the chest—ideally to the beat of a song with 100–120 beats per minute (like Stayin’ Alive by the Bee Gees).
For infants, children, or individuals experiencing cardiac arrest due to drowning or overdose, traditional CPR with rescue breaths is still recommended.
Join the Nation of Lifesavers
The American Heart Association encourages everyone to become part of the Nation of Lifesavers—a movement to empower more people with the skills and confidence to act in a cardiac emergency. At HOPES, we support this mission and encourage our community to get trained.
