Celebrate National Nutrition Month with HOPES’ New Nutrition Care Team

This year, we expanded our comprehensive care by implementing a Nutrition Care Team. The team includes two Registered Dietitians, Kate and Jessica, who provide nutrition education and specialized meal plans; plus, thanks to the support of Renown Health, a Diabetes Prevention Program Coordinator, Amanda who helps clients with prediabetes increase their health and reduce their risk of getting diabetes.

One of our Registered Dietitians is available Monday through Friday for individualized nutrition appointments. Patients are encouraged to bring a family member or close friend to their appointment since we realize that eating is social and impacted by those we spend time and eat with.

The Diabetes Prevention Program is a year-long wellness program that helps patients reduce their risk for developing type 2 diabetes through classes on healthy eating habits, weight loss strategies, stress management techniques, and encouraging exercise.

Our nutrition philosophy at HOPES is that “All Foods Can Fit into any Meal Plan.” Because of this, one of our dietitians will work with clients individually to formulate a plan that works for them based on the foods they like and commonly eat. There is no one eating plan that is right for everyone which is why we aren’t into fad diets or cutting out whole groups of foods.  At HOPES, we meet our patients where they are it – same goes for our nutrition services. We want to collaborate with our patients to meet their needs, create goals and set a path forward to achieve them.

Nutrition Tip:

Hydration: Everyone knows you should drink water, but how much do you really need? Divide your weight in half and that equals the amount of ounces you need to drink daily for adequate hydration. Not a big water drinker? Flavor it up! Consider adding things like cucumber, lemon, berries, herbs or even ginger to you water so it’s not so plain and boring.

Recipe: Strawberry, Basil and Lemon Infused Water

  • 5 cups water
  • 1 cup ice cubes (optional)
  • 1/2 cup strawberries stemmed and sliced, fresh or frozen
  • 5 large basil leaves torn
  • 1 lemon thinly sliced

Place strawberries, basil and lemon slices in the bottom of a pitcher. Top with ice and then water. Refrigerate 1 hour. Then pour into a glass and enjoy!
