Medical-Legal Partnership

Supporting our community well beyond medical care

The Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP) provides legal assistance to HOPES patients to address legal needs that impact health.

Here are some examples of what the MLP will address:
• Family law: divorce, custody, domestic violence (protection orders), minor guardianship
• Landlord/tenant: discrimination, unlawful eviction, termination of essential utilities, habitability
• Immigration: family petitions, humanitarian petitions (victims of crime, domestic violence), Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)
• Income maintenance (denials of SSI and SSDI)
• Wills, living wills, guardianship, powers of attorney
• Sealing records

The MLP can only help in Civil Issues. The MLP will generally not address:
• Small claims matters
• Medical malpractice
• Personal injury
• Products liability
• Grievances against HOPES
• Criminal defense
• Compliance Issues
• Parental defense in the dependency court (Foster care, CPS)

If you have a legal problem that impacts your health, talk to a member of your HOPES care team for more information. MLP referrals are handled by Case Management.
