Roberto struggled with addiction for much of his life. Now 51, Roberto has overcome challenges and is in recovery, thanks to the care and services he received at Northern Nevada HOPES.

Growing up in a tough environment, Roberto struggled to survive and made choices that led to prison. Despite having good parents, trauma haunted him since childhood. Self-medicating became his coping mechanism from the age of 12, leading to a cycle of struggles.

The passing of his father five years ago broke him, driving him back to substance use. After two years of addiction, he realized he needed a change and gave therapy a chance at 50 years old. At HOPES, he found a supportive community and services that addressed all his needs, including therapy, psychiatry, and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).

Through these programs and the tools Roberto acquired, it allowed him to change his life, to become a stronger person.

“I started obtaining tools that I was putting to use when I needed them, and I started feeling stronger. It made me realize that if I wanted it, I could succeed.”

Roberto’s past involvement in gang-related violence and subsequent survivor guilt are experiences he now uses to advocate for change and is committed to making the world a better place. He has transformed his negative past into a positive force, working as a boxing coach and sharing his story to inspire others.

“I’m to the point where I can smile, I don’t really have to look over my shoulder because I’m confident…”

Roberto’s message is simple: love yourself and make the right choices. If you or someone you know is facing addiction or any struggle, seek help, and consider starting your journey at Northern Nevada HOPES.
