HOPES Organic Garden
The idea for the HOPES Organic Garden was the brainchild of Michael A., who wanted to improve the food selection at the HOPES Food Pantry. In early May of 2010, Michael decided to revolutionize the HOPES Food Pantry by planting an onsite Organic Garden for clients of HOPES.
Michael brought the idea to Stacey Rice, Director of Social Services, and began sending donation requests to local businesses. Thanks to generous donations from Reno Lumber, Moana Nursery, and the Allen Family, construction and planting commenced in late June.
In the first year, clients planted tomatoes, squashes, and bell peppers. Even with such a late start, the garden produced several harvests in the Fall of 2010.
The goal is to expand the HOPES Organic Garden to 20 planters, each with a variety of organic fruits and vegetables. In addition, volunteers will add a small herb garden and compost area to keep the Garden as sustainable as possible.
