A: No.
Q: What is the so-called “window period” for HIV?
A: The time between initial HIV infection and when an HIV positive test is accurate – 25 days to 3 months is how long it takes your body to build enough antibodies to show up positive.
Q: Does HOPES have HOPWA (Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS)?
A: Yes, HOPES is the recipient of HOPWA funds for Northern Nevada. Currently there is a waiting list for housing services.
Q: How long must you be a resident of Nevada before qualifying for HOPWA services?
A: Individuals must be Nevada residents for at least 30 days to be eligible for HOPWA services.
Q: Can someone with no symptoms transmit HIV?
A: Yes, however those with lower viral loads are less likely to transmit HIV. Early HIV treatment is crucial in keeping viral loads low and preventing the spread of HIV.
Q: How can I be sure whether or not someone else is infected with HIV?
A: You can’t, which is why we encourage everyone to practice safe sex and get tested at least once a year.
Q: Does the HOPES Pharmacy take insurance?
A: Yes, we are contracted with most insurance providers and Nevada Medicaid.
Q: Can I get non-HIV prescriptions filled at the HOPES Pharmacy?
A: Yes, the HOPES Pharmacy can fill many other prescriptions in addition to HIV medications.
Q: I just found out that I am HIV+. What’s my first step?
A: Contact our Social Services Department at (775) 348-2893 to schedule an appointment with one of our case managers.
Q: Can HOPES help me with transportation to and from appointments?
A: Yes, HOPES can assist with transportation and will also work with your insurance provider to see if you qualify for travel assistance.
